CABANA NEW EMPLOYEE GUIDE
Owner – Scott
General Manager – Sue
Welcome to the Cabana Crew. We hope you find your work experience here enjoyable and challenging. You will find that we do not have many rules and procedures, but we do expect you to do the following:
Stay busy.
If we are not busy and there is no one to wait on, find something to do. You can always clean tables, sweep the lobby/patio, wipe counters, pick up trash outside, clean doors & windows, clean bathrooms, wash dishes, etc. You can also restock items such as cups, lids, utensils, condiments, ice cream, and toppings. There is always something that needs to be done. All of our managers and shift leaders work hard at staying busy. If one of them asks you to do a specific job, you are expected to do it without complaining. When finishing up a shift, please leave things as you would like to find them.
Let's work hard on making our store as clean as possible inside and out. Please keep the doors and drive-through window clean throughout the day. Keep the tables cleaned off and the lot picked up. Don't set the bleach water bucket (or other cleaning supplies) where the customer can see it. Let's make a good first impression for the customers!
Be polite.
Say “please” and “thank you”. If you are working the inside register, tell the customer “Hello” first. Then ask them if you may take their order. If you are working the drive-through, say “Welcome to Cabana (or Cabana Grill), may I take your order?” Try and be friendly even if they are not. Always thank them after taking an order and when handing out their food. Apologize if you make a mistake and try to make it right for the customer. I want them to always leave happy. You need to be courteous at all times!
Try your best to get along with your co-workers. It makes it hard on everyone when there is bickering and complaining going on. I understand that there may be personality conflicts, but I expect everyone to be courteous to each other. If there is a problem, please talk it out immediately or bring it to one of the manager’s attention. All the managers will then work together to resolve the problem.
Help the customer as quickly as possible.
Our number one goal is to get the food out to the customer in a timely manner. You need to make the customer your number one priority. If you are doing something that can wait (like cleaning, taking a break, talking on the phone, smoking, stocking, etc.) and you see a customer waiting, then stop what you are doing and help the customer. Also, please help your co-workers if they are swamped and you’re not busy. That means moving from kitchen to ice cream or vice-versa if need be. If there is nothing but ice-cream orders, I expect the cook to be up front helping (even if there is cleaning or stocking to be done). We need to do everything we can to speed up our food prep time. That has been the number one complaint recently - that it takes us too long to get the orders out!
BENEFITS
Food: All fountain pop is free and you will receive a 50% discount on all other food while you are working (not after your shift ends). Absolutely no food is to go out free or discounted to your friends or family.
Uniforms: You will receive two blue shirts and one hat or visor, which you will be responsible for keeping clean. You may purchase additional t-shirts for $8 (2XL & 3XL t-shirts are $10), sweatshirts for $15 (2XL & 3XL sweatshirts are $20), hats for $10 and visors for $10. If working at Cabana Grill, you are required to have a pair of nonslip shoes. Walmart has them fairly cheap if you don't currently have a pair. Scott will reimburse you for half their cost.
The shirts and hat are yours to keep unless you work here for less than a month. In that case, you must turn them in (in good condition) on your last day. Otherwise, $24 will be held out of your last paycheck. If you were given a fleece pullover, an additional $20 will be held out. You will be reimbursed in cash when you return your Cabana clothing in good condition.
You must wear your Cabana shirt and hat while working. You may wear shorts as long as they are not too short. Cabana crew members may not wear crocs or sandals or similar types of shoes.
Annual Bonus: You will receive a bonus equal to one week of wages (average of your previous 10 weeks) after you have been with us for one year. Just remember to remind Scott.
MISCELLANEOUS POLICIES
Smoking: You may take one smoking break per 4 hour shift. You may smoke behind the shed at Cabana Grill or by the garage at Cabana. Please do not smoke outside the back door or in the bathroom. Just like any break, you are expected to return to work if needed.
Days off: We will try the best we can to work with you on your schedule, but may not always be able to accommodate all requests - especially if someone continually asks for weekends off or something like that. You may request days off, but your requests for the next schedule must be made on or before Saturday at 5pm. The schedule will usually be posted one week in advance. All requests must be dated and placed on the bulletin board. If too many people request a specific day, days off will be given in the order of how they were requested.
We are much more flexible with your schedule than most companies. In return, we ask that you also be able to change your hours if needed. For instance, if you are scheduled to work until 9:00pm but we are not busy, you may be asked to leave early. Conversely, you may be asked to work extra if someone else is unable to come in or we are unusually busy.
Time and Half Policy:
Anyone who comes in to work for someone who is unable to, will receive time and ½ for the extra time worked. Mark on the schedule the extra time worked and whom you worked for. This policy is in place to reward those who come in when asked on a moment’s notice. I appreciate it when someone changes his/her plans and comes in to help when we are short-handed. I feel that anyone doing this deserves to be compensated for it.
Guidelines
- The time and ½ applies if someone does not show up when scheduled and you come in to work their shift.
It is not for trading shifts with others.
- It also applies if you were already scheduled to work during that day, but you come in early or stay late. (Only the extra hours will be at time and ½.)
- It only applies if you have less than 12 hours notice that you will be working for someone else.
Sick Days:
If you are sick and unable to come into work, here’s what you need to do:
Contact someone who is not working and see if they can come in for you. (You need to try and get someone to cover first! Try to find someone who has worked here at least as long as you. If you can’t find anyone, then text Sue or whoever is in charge at the store. Someone will try to find a replacement for you.
- You are expected to work when scheduled. If you are unable to be at work when scheduled, it is up to you to find a replacement. Do not wait until the last minute to try and find a replacement - give as much notice as possible.
- If you are unable to find a replacement and you do not show up, you will be placed on probation for 30 days. If it happens again within the probationary period, you may be let go or your hours may be reduced.
- The only excused absences are sickness (Dr.’s note required) or a death in the family. However, you still need to try and find someone to come in for you.
Cabana Phone:
The phone is not for your personal use. You need to get a manager’s permission before using it. I would prefer it if the manager or shift leader answers all phone calls to the store.
Cell Phones:
All cell phones need to stay locked in the back cabinet. They are not to be used during your work shift. If someone needs to get ahold of you, they may call the store phone. Only the manager(s) on duty may have their cell phone available.
Friends out front:
The lobby in Cabana Grill or patio at Cabana is not a place for your friends to hang out while you are working. It is fine if they come in to eat, but you need to continue working. If they stay past a reasonable time, you may be asked to have them leave.
Hand Washing & Food Handling:
Needless to say, it is very important to keep your hands clean while working here. You must always wash your hands after using the restroom or smoking. If you are cooking, you need to wear gloves at all times.
If you are working in the front area, you are not allowed to touch any food item directly. For instance, you need to be careful when picking up the french fries and only touch the bags. When making a cone, you must put a napkin around it before picking it up.
Wages & Paydays:
All new employees start at $14.00/hr. There will be a probationary period of 30 days from the date you start. One of the managers will meet with you at that time to discuss the job you have been doing (what you are doing well, what needs to be improved, and whether you will continue as an employee). Future raises will be discussed at this time. All raises are based on performance. We look at the following skills:
You will be paid every two weeks on Wednesday. Your paycheck will be automatically deposited into your checking account.
All new employees need to fill out the New Employee Information Form ASAP which can be found below:
